How to access your ICS HD
A Step By Step Guide
Did you know that all students who are enrolled in ICS courses or belong to the School of ICS have a special ICS Linux Account? With this account, you are provided a hard drive that allows you to store your ICS files so that you can access them from lab. This tutorial will show you how to access them from anywhere.
Step 1: First Set Up VPN
Let’s first begin by visiting the NACS Website. If you haven’t already been there, NACS is the center for technology, network, email, security settings at UCI. The website is located at http://nacs.uci.edu.

Once you reach the website, locate VPN on the right-hand menu. Click on this.
VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It gives your computer the ability to connect directly (through the internet) to UCI’s campus network. This gives your connection a UCI authorized IP address and allows you to use the many UCI-only available services like the UCI Libraries resources and, in our case, the ICS Network Hard drives.
At the bottom of the page, you will see a link that says Download the Software. By clicking this link, you will be taken to a page that allows you to download the Cisco VPN software.
Follow the onscreen instructions. If you are accessing the page from an on-campus location, you may follow the steps under On Campus and if you are accessing the page from an off-campus location, you may follow the steps under Off Campus.
Installing & Connecting
The following are guides to install the VPN software and connect to the UCI VPN Network.

Once you have successfully installed the VPN software, connect to the UCI VPN Network.
Note: You must be connected to the VPN network in order to access the ICS Network Hard drive.
Step 2: Map the Network Hard drive
Note: In order to map the network hard drive to your computer, you must have an internet connection and you must be connected to the UCI network via the VPN software mentioned above.

Set up for Windows NT/2000/XP
- Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
- Right click on “My Computer” and select “Map Network Drive”
- For most users, you will map your home directory through DATA.
\\data.ics.uci.edu\user_name
- If you have difficulty connecting, it may be necessary to use IP addresses instead of hostnames. This is usually because there is an error in your computer’s DNS configuration.
\\128.195.21.20\user_name
- If your home directory is not located on DATA or you are mapping a group account, then you should use TROLL.
\\troll.ics.uci.edu\user_name
\\128.195.18.60\user_name
- For Windows 2000/XP, click on “different user name” to bring up a window to enter your username and password.
Username: UCI-ICS\<ICS Windows username>.
Password: ICS Windows Password.
- If you are using Windows NT, type the username in the space “Connect As” and click OK. The computer should prompt you for a password.
